7 October is a wonderful time to celebrate the contribution older people make to our communities, and Queensland Seniors Month provides plenty of opportunities for Gold Coast seniors to get involved, meet new people and enjoy activities close to home. Held throughout October, Queensland Seniors Month celebrates older Queenslanders and the many ways they contribute to our communities – as volunteers, workers, carers, grandparents, community leaders and valued friends and neighbours. It is also about encouraging social connection and creating opportunities for older people to remain active, informed and involved. Across the Gold Coast, a wide variety of activities and events will take place throughout the month. There are opportunities to enjoy music and entertainment, discover new interests, take part in community activities, learn more about health and wellbeing, and connect with local organisations and services. Among the events are concerts and entertainment, including the Mayor’s Seniors Concert at HOTA, as well as community concerts and gatherings in areas such as Mudgeeraba. There are also health and lifestyle events where seniors can learn more about the services and support available to them. For those looking for practical information, the Care & Lifestyle Expo in Labrador and the Gold Coast Seniors Health & Lifestyle Expo at Broadbeach provide opportunities to meet organisations involved in health, aged care, allied health, community services and lifestyle support. There are also plenty of opportunities simply to get out and meet other people. Events such as Seniors Community Connect Day at Currumbin RSL bring together local organisations, clubs and activity groups, making it easier to discover what is available in your own community. Find an event near you With so many activities taking place across the Gold Coast, the easiest way to find out what is happening is to visit the official Queensland Seniors Month website at www. qldseniorsmonth.org.au. The online event calendar allows you to search for activities by location and date, making it easy to find something happening near you. Seniors Month is a great reminder that getting older doesn't mean slowing down. It is about staying connected, trying something new, enjoying the company of others and making the most of everything our wonderful Gold Coast community has to offer.
