2 Flying out for Christmas? Sort your Will before you go - Olivia Scott, Solicitor - A big overseas trip has a way of bringing your Will to mind. The flights are booked for Bali, Japan or the grandkids in London, and the thing that’s sat on your to-do list for years suddenly feels a bit more pressing. Good. You’re already sorting the pet sitter and who’s watering the tomatoes. Your Will belongs on that list too. If you don’t have a Will, Queensland law decides who inherits, using a set formula. It might match what you’d have chosen. Often it doesn’t, especially in blended families, where a stepchild you raised can miss out entirely. If you have an old Will, dig it out. Getting married generally cancels an earlier Will in Queensland, and divorce cancels gifts to your former spouse. New grandkids, a new home, an executor who’s now 85: Wills go stale. Then there’s the document people forget: an Enduring Power of Attorney. A Will only works after you die. If you’re hurt overseas and can’t make decisions, an EPA lets someone you trust pay your bills and make health decisions for you. Without one, your family may have to apply to QCAT for that authority. One last thing. A Queensland Will must be signed in front of 2 witnesses at the same time, so give yourself a couple weeks before you fly. We come to you That’s where I come in. I’m a Wills and estates lawyer with Kate Redman & Associates, and I’m based in Nerang. Wills and estates is the only area of law we practise. Our team covers the Gold Coast, Brisbane and the Redlands, and we come to you. I’ll sit down with you at your kitchen table, talk through what you want, and explain your Will in plain English so you understand exactly what you’re signing. Our estate planning is on a fixed fee. You’ll know the cost before we start, and there’s no clock running while we talk. For most people, a simple Will and EPA done properly is all they need. I’ll tell you if you need more than that, and I’ll tell you if you don’t. To book a home visit before you head away, call me on 0480 844 490. 4 A bowel screening test could save your life. FREE & EASY. No fuss. Tick bowel screening off your list Australian residents aged 45 to 74 with a Medicare card are invited to screen for bowel cancer, one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers. The free test can help find early bowel changes, sometimes years before cancer develops. Once bowel cancer starts growing, there are often no obvious symptoms until the later stages of disease progression, when treatment is more involved. Taking a few minutes to do the test now could make all the difference. Lost your test or never received one? New or replacement test kits can be requested online at ncsr.gov.au/boweltest or by phoning 1800 627 701. 5 Why the School Holidays Are the Smartest Time to Learn to Drive For most teenagers, getting a driver's licence sits somewhere between exciting and terrifying — and for parents, it's often just terrifying. But there is one window of the year that makes the whole process noticeably easier: the school holidays. During term time, driving lessons compete with homework, sport, part-time jobs and everything else in a teenager's schedule. A lesson squeezed between school pick-up and dinner is rarely anyone's best work. In the holidays, that pressure disappears. Students arrive relaxed, focused and ready to actually absorb what they're learning — and with nothing else competing for their attention, skills tend to stick faster. The holidays also allow for something term time rarely does: momentum. Skills like hill starts, merging and roundabout judgement are built through repetition within short timeframes. Spreading five lessons across five school weeks means re-learning each time. Fitting them across a single fortnight means each lesson builds directly on the last, and the gap between learner and confident driver shrinks dramatically. It's not just for teenagers, either. Plenty of adults return to driving after years away, or prepare for an aged driving assessment. The holiday period offers the same advantage: calmer roads during the day, more flexible availability, and time to rebuild confidence properly rather than in fragments. There are practical considerations, of course. Queensland requires 100 logged hours of supervised driving before a learner can sit their practical test, and the holidays are an ideal time to start banking those hours with a professional instructor before adding family supervised sessions on top. Driving is one of life's most useful skills, and one of its most confidencebuilding. Giving learners the time and headspace to do it properly is an investment that pays off every single day afterwards — for them, and for the parents doing the supervising. Spotto Driving School offers manual and automatic lessons across the Gold Coast, including night lessons and pick-up from home. Call 0417 855 512 for a chat.

6 A busy month for the Rotary Club of Ormeau-Pimpama October has been a very busy month for the Rotary Club of Ormeau-Pimpama. Firstly, we had the opportunity to speak at the Probus Club of Pimpama’s monthly meeting. Our President, Mr Russell Mowles was unable to attend, so our fellow Club Member, Jenni Fagence stepped in at the last minute. Mrs Lorna Riley was also there to represent our Club and answer questions. It was an opportunity to demonstrate the support between the two groups. Our Club is the sponsor Club for both the Pimpama and Ormeau Probus Clubs. We provide support for the Pimpama Probus Expos, and they in turn, provide much needed support at our Teddy Bear’s Picnic each year. A brief outline was presented with the history to the Rotary Club of OrmeauPimpama, which included information on events and projects that we are currently working on, which included the announcement for the green light for the construction of a PCYC in Pimpama by The Premier Mr David Cristafulli . Our club has provided strong advocacy for a local PCYC in conjunction with State member Mr Michael Crandon and Division One Councillor and Deputy Mayor Mark Hammel. Fundraising through our local business partner sponsors, our Charity Golf Day, Teddy Bears Picnic and our famous “Sausage Sizzles” provide much needed funds for our ongoing projects, and local community groups, which have benefitted include Ormeau and Rocky Point Fire Brigades, Esuarve, Volunteer Marine Rescue, Safe Haven, Cancer Council Australia, the Starlight Children’s Foundation and Variety Children’s Charity. October is also the month for our Annual Golf Day. This year, funds raised will be allocated to the Twelve Baskets Charity. Their aim is to purchase a new boat so that they can further assist the homeless around the Jacobs Well and bay area. ARRC Presentation We wish to thank the Ormeau Football Club for providing the venue and food for our recent social evening. Representatives from ARRC (Advanced Resource Recovery Centre) were our guest speakers. It was a very informative presentation about a great initiative for the future of the Gold Coast and our waste management program. We also had the Vice President from the Ormeau Football Club introduce herself - the Club is very keen to work together with us. Another of our guests, Raj, from the Rotary Club of Brisbane Rotary International, gave us information on how we can help the Fijian people by donating clothes and shoes. A container will be sent over to Fiji later this year. Fellow member, Wendy Tunley, kick-started a project of donation bags for the homeless. We will be assembling these bags at our next social night. Please contact us if you have items that we can use towards these Christmas care packages. The food was great as usual, and we thank everyone who came along to enjoy our time together. 7 Use it or Lose It! 3 Bulk Billed Eye Tests 3 Most Health Funds Accepted 3 External Prescriptions Welcome PARIS MIKI OPTICAL Shop 18, 12 Sir John Overall Drive, Helensvale Plaza Phone 5580 5010 | www.paris-miki.com.au If you haven’t visited your optometrist this year and are among the nearly 55% of people with private health insurance, now is the perfect time to schedule an eye check-up. Many private health fund benefits expire at the end of December, so this is your chance to take full advantage of your coverage before it’s too late. You've been paying premiums all year, so why not make the most of the optical benefits your health fund offers? Now is an ideal time to prioritise your eye health. Most health funds don’t allow you to carry over unused benefits from year to year. Once January 1 arrives, any benefits you didn’t use the previous year will expire. Regular eye exams are crucial, as your prescription may change over time. As we age, our eyes become more susceptible to conditions like presbyopia, cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration. Early detection is key to timely treatment. See More Clearly If you haven't updated your prescription in a while, you might be amazed by how much lens technology has advanced. Lenses today are thinner, lighter, and available with a range of coatings. In addition to improving your vision, modern lenses can be tailored to your specific needs. Many feature antireflective and scratch-resistant coatings, as well as options that reduce harmful UV exposure, block blue light from screens, or transition from clear to dark when exposed to sunlight. How to Use Your Rebate There are plenty of ways to use your health fund rebate. Why not invest in an extra pair of reading glasses for home? No more searching the living room for your misplaced pair! Or consider prescription sports glasses. Your private health insurance may also cover a variety of eye care services and "no gap" frames. Paris Miki Helensvale accepts all health funds, so book your appointment and make the most of your benefits. Paris Miki Optical’s Store Manager Michael has over 33 year’s experience as a qualified Optical technician and has been working in the area for over 25 years. There is an onsite workshop for quicker spectacle making, so you don’t have to be without your own frames for weeks if we are using your own frame for new lenses; repairs can be done onsite and same day service is available on in store stock lenses. Maximise Your Health Cover Don’t kiss your optical benefits goodbye! $150 OFF COMPLETE PAIR *Excludes Maui Jim, Zeal and Oakley Sun RX & Meta Range Don’t forget to use your Optical Benefit before 31st December

Your birthday season brings an extra reason to celebrate, and your cheerful outlook could lift everyone’s spirits. Just remember to check your wallet before declaring that Christmas shopping is finished! CAPRICORN - You may be tempted to keep working right up until Christmas, Capricorn, but even you need a break! December is a good time to recognise how much you’ve achieved this year. Accept help when it’s offered, enjoy a little festive indulgence and remember that relaxing is not a waste of time. AQUARIUS - Forget doing things the traditional way — you may have some wonderfully different ideas for celebrating Christmas this year. Friends will appreciate your originality, although your suggestion of a barbecue in the middle of the living room might not win everyone over! Keep an open mind and enjoy the company.
