2 The Rotary Club of Ormeau-Pimpama has officially handed over the new command Vehicle to The Rocky Point Fire Brigade, marking a significant milestone for the local volunteer emergency service and wider community. The vehicle was funded as a joint campaign by the Rotary Club of Ormeau-Pimpama and the Rocky Point Fire Brigade with strong support from local sponsors and businesses. The new command vehicle will enhance the brigade’s operational capability by providing improved on-scene coordination, communication, and general utility requirements. The vehicle handover was recognised at a well-attended community event at the Jacobs Well Hotel on Tuesday 17 March 2026 bringing together local volunteers, sponsors, community members, and dignitaries to celebrate the collaborative effort behind the project. Rotary Club of Ormeau-Pimpama President Russell Mowles acknowledged the dignitaries in attendance. The State Member for Coomera, Michael Crandon, Gold Coast City Councill Division 1 Councillor and Deputy Mayor, Mark Hammel, Rotary Area Governor, Terry Newman, and Beenleigh Rotary President Tony Sykes, Queensland Fire Department Representative, Inspector Mark Wilkenson. Mr Mowles thanked the individual major sponsors, Craig and Nikky Dowling of Centra Developments, Brian, Mitchell and Fraser Gassman of Gassman Development Perspectives, Todd, and Camille Pepper who kindly donated and aided the collaborative effort behind the project . On behalf of Rotary and our local Ormeau, Pimpama, and surrounding communities, I want to thank our sponsors and supporters who helped make this project possible,” Mr Mowles said. This vehicle will significantly enhance the brigade’s operational capability by improving the on-scene co-ordination, communication, and support for our volunteer firefighters. Mr Mowles said the project highlighted the strength of community partnerships. “This initiative demonstrates what can be achieved when volunteer organisations, local Government and local businesses work together to support the people who serve on the front line,” he said. A further highlight of the evening was the presentation of Rotary’s highest honour, The Paul Harris Fellow award, to GCCC Division One Councillor and Deputy Mayor Mark Hammel. Mr Mowles said, “The award recognises Cr Hammels assistance in helping secure sponsorships as well as his previous assistance in supporting The Rotary Club of Ormeau-Pimpama initiatives including, a command vehicle for the Ormeau Rural Fire Brigade and a 12– seater bus for “Esuarve”, a local award winning, not for profit group dedicated to assisting and helping disengaged youth in our community. Mr Hammel said he was humbled by the recognition and praised the strength of community partnerships across the Northern Gold Coast. This new command vehicle will make a real difference to the Rocky Point Fire Brigade and the volunteers who put their hand up to protect our community, ”Cr Hammel said. But more broadly, tonight is really about recognising the people, organisations and businesses in our community continue to step up and support local volunteer groups. I am incredibly humbled by the recognition, but the real credit belongs to The Rotary Club of Ormeau-Pimpama, the sponsors and the volunteers who make projects like this possible. The event was a powerful demonstration of what can be achieved when volunteer groups, local government and businesses and volunteers work together. The new command vehicle stands as a symbol of community spirit and the shared commitment to supporting those who serve on the front line. Through partnership and service, the Ormeau-Pimpama community continues to show its unwavering support for its local volunteer groups. 3 In the intricate workings of the human body, the eyes are remarkable organs that require a myriad of nutrients to function optimally and stave off diseases. The adage “you are what you eat” holds particularly true when it comes to maintaining eye health. A balanced diet is not just beneficial for your waistline but also for your eyesight. The connection between nutrition and eye health is well-established. Nutrients such as vitamins C and E, zinc, lutein, zeaxanthin, and omega-3 fatty acids play pivotal roles in maintaining eye health and preventing conditions like cataracts and agerelated macular degeneration (AMD). These nutrients act as antioxidants, protecting the eyes from oxidative stress that can lead to chronic eye diseases. Vitamin C, found abundantly in citrus fruits and vegetables, supports the health of blood vessels in the eyes. It’s believed to combat cataract formation and, when combined with other essential nutrients, can slow the progression of AMD and visual acuity loss. Vitamin E, another powerful antioxidant, can be sourced from nuts and seeds and contributes to cell protection from free radicals. Zinc, a mineral present in high concentrations in the eyes, plays a crucial role in bringing vitamin A from the liver to the retina, aiding in the production of melanin, a protective pigment in the eyes. Meat, poultry, fish, and legumes are excellent sources of zinc. Lutein and zeaxanthin are carotenoids found in the retina. They are natural sunblock for the eyes, filtering harmful high-energy blue wavelengths of light and protecting against oxidative damage. Leafy greens, eggs, and other foods are rich in these nutrients. Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA and DHA, are vital for cell membrane health in the retina and may help prevent AMD. Fish like salmon, mackerel, and sardines are excellent sources of omega-3s. The Mediterranean diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, fish, and whole grains, exemplifies a dietary pattern that supports eye health. It’s not just about individual nutrients; the synergy of a nutrient-rich diet contributes to overall eye health and function. The significance of nutrition in eye health cannot be overstated. As we age, our eyes are susceptible to various conditions, but a diet rich in specific nutrients can help protect our vision. It’s a simple yet powerful truth: the food we consume can have a profound impact on our eyesight. Schedule Regular Eye Exams Routine eye exams are crucial for detecting potential eye conditions before they manifest symptoms and cause irreversible vision loss or blindness. 4 Protecting Your Loved Ones with a Testamentary Trust When it comes to planning your estate, most people think only of Wills. While a Will is essential, for many Queensland families, a testamentary trust can provide an additional layer of protection and flexibility that a standard Will simply cannot offer. A testamentary trust is a trust that is created under a Will and only comes into effect after the death of the person making the Will (the testator). Unlike other types of trusts that operate during your lifetime, testamentary trusts are activated by your passing, allowing a trustee to manage and distribute assets according to your instructions. Why Testamentary Trusts Are Valuable There are several reasons why testamentary trusts can be beneficial: 1. Protection for Vulnerable Beneficiaries If your beneficiaries include minor children, adult children with special needs, or someone who may struggle to manage a large sum of money, a testamentary trust ensures that funds are distributed in a structured and controlled way. Instead of handing over a lump sum, the trustee can release funds gradually, according to the beneficiary’s needs. This provides security and prevents potential mismanagement of assets. 2. Flexibility in Distributions Trustees have discretion over how and when funds are distributed. For example, a trustee could release funds for education, health care, or housing expenses, while preserving the remainder for later use. This flexibility ensures that your assets are used in the way you intended, even years after your passing. 3. Tax Planning Benefits Testamentary trusts can also provide tax advantages. Income generated by the trust can be distributed among beneficiaries in a tax-efficient manner. While tax considerations should never be the sole reason for establishing a trust, careful planning can reduce the overall tax burden on your estate and your beneficiaries. 4. Asset Protection Assets held within a testamentary trust are generally protected from claims by creditors, divorcing spouses, or others seeking to challenge inheritance. This can give families peace of mind that their loved ones will benefit from the estate exactly as intended. HILTON HARTLEY LAWYERS Pimpama City Shopping Centre, 102 Pimpama- Jacobs Well Rd | P 56 10 80 60 ORMEAU LEGAL - Legal Support You Can Count On - Practical Examples Consider a parent with young children. Without a testamentary trust, any inheritance would usually be managed by a court-appointed guardian or given outright when the child reaches 18. With a testamentary trust, the parent can appoint a trusted family member or professional as trustee to manage the assets, releasing funds over time for schooling, health needs, or future milestones. Similarly, if a beneficiary has special needs or a disability, a testamentary trust can help ensure they remain eligible for government support while still benefiting from the inheritance. Key Considerations in Queensland While testamentary trusts offer many benefits, proper drafting is crucial. Trustees must understand their duties, including maintaining proper records, managing investments, and complying with the terms of the trust. Mistakes in the trust deed or Will can lead to disputes, tax inefficiencies, or unintended consequences for beneficiaries. When considering a testamentary trust, it’s important to think about: • Who will serve as trustee and whether a professional trustee is appropriate • How distributions should be structured for each beneficiary • Whether the trust will continue for a set period or until certain conditions are met Getting Professional Advice Creating a testamentary trust is a complex process that should never be attempted without professional guidance. Legal advice is essential to ensure the trust is valid, enforceable, and achieves your objectives. Tax and financial advice can also help you maximise the benefits and avoid potential pitfalls. 5 It seems every week there is another story of an unprovoked dog attack with over 700 incidents reported to Council each year. Local residents often prefer small, friendly dogs. These placid pets are almost defenceless against more aggressive breeds. While dangerous dogs do have strict rules applied to them by council, attacks still happen and the results can be devastating, with vet fees often over $10,000. Experts warn it’s important to train your dog to obey basic commands, and if in doubt, make sure your dog is muzzled when they are out in public or in the company of other dogs. There are thousands of dog attacks in Australia every year. An attack can happen in the blink of an eye and leave your precious pet with severe injuries. An Ace Pet Vest gives you those precious seconds to intervene and help prevent serious injuries or even death. Free dog registration for new pups! Did you know dog registration is currently free for pups under 12 months old until 31 August 2026? Seniors aged 60 and over, as well as veterans, can also enjoy this offer for their first 2 desexed dogs. By law, all dogs must be microchipped before 12 weeks and registered from 12 weeks of age, or within 14 days of moving into the city. Registration fees help fund important community services including new off-leash areas, dog bag dispensers, lost and found support, pet education programs, City pound operations, animal management services and free replacement registration tags. Keep your dog’s registration and microchip up to date so we can easily reunite you if they get lost. Discounted registration is also available for desexed dogs, associated members and 3-year registrations. In addition, pets can have a quiet space to heal from an illness or surgery or support to improve various behaviours. Fostering is one of the most important ways to help animals in need. In addition, providing AWLQ residents somewhere to stay for a short time helps save lives. AWLQ promise to never euthanise a healthy, sociable or treatable animal in their care. And they believe that all animals in our care deserve to have the best possible chance at finding a loving, permanent home. AWLQ foster carers have one of the most critical roles – they allow AWLQ to keep this promise to thousands of animals yearly. This brilliant book had me hooked from the beginning’ – Alice Feeney, author of Beautiful Ugly Breathlessly compulsive courtroom drama with expertly-crafted twists that you won’t see coming, Dissection of a Murder is the razor-sharp debut novel from Jo Murray. A dead judge. A silent defendant. And a courtroom full of liars. When Leila Reynolds is handed her first murder case, she’s shocked at how high-profile it is: the murder of a well-respected, well-known judge. This shouldn’t be the kind of case she’s leading; it’s way beyond her expertise. But the defendant, Jack Millman, is clear. He wants her, and only her. To make things worse, he’s refusing to talk. How is she supposed to prove herself on what appears to be an unwinnable case? Losing is not an option. She must find the most persuasive argument. Trials aren’t won by convincing judges or fellow barristers – they’re all about convincing a jury. Suddenly, Leila finds herself fighting not only to keep Jack out of prison, but also to keep her own secrets buried. It’s true what they say – there are two sides to every story. In reality, Sailability is something far more meaningful. It’s a community built on inclusion, independence, and the simple joy of being out on the water, regardless of physical ability. Sailability Gold Coast is a volunteer run, not for profit organisation dedicated to giving people with disabilities the opportunity to enjoy on water activities. Our fleet includes twelve 303 class skippered dinghies, three keelboats with crew, and a fully accessible pontoon boat designed to accommodate wheelchairs and carers. No sailing experience is required — just a desire to enjoy time on the water. Our on shore facilities include dockside hoists for easy boat access, lifejackets, slings, and supportive seating pods. And after a morning on the water, there’s even the traditional sausage sizzle to refuel and share a chat. We operate every Tuesday from 9am to 1pm at the Southport Yacht Club, Hollywell Sailing Squadron in Marina Crescent, Hollywell. Visitors, carers, and newcomers are welcome at any time. If you’ve ever thought about volunteering, we would love to have you join us. Sailing skills aren’t necessary — there are many roles both on and off the water, and we’ll teach you everything you need to know. Most importantly, you’ll become part of a fun, supportive community. For more information, visit www.sailabilitygc.org. A bit of background - Sailability began in the UK in the early 1980s, thanks to the vision of Ian Harrison MBE. It has since grown into a global network operating in 23 countries, with 178 clubs in the UK alone. Queensland is home to 15 clubs, stretching from the far north to the state border — a testament to what passion, community spirit, and a shared love of the water can achieve. Here on the Gold Coast, that legacy is thriving. It lives on through dedicated volunteers, embraced by participants, and celebrated every time someone heads out on the water and enjoys whatever the day brings.
