6 Community grants program launched to assist summer storm recoveries A fresh offering of financial assistance for Gold Coast and Scenic Rim residents affected by the destructive summer storms has been launched. The Reconnection for Resilience Community Grants Program provides community grants of up to $5000 for local not-for-profit organisations, healthcare organisations, sporting clubs and primary care providers in the storm and flood hit areas. It’s an initiative of the Gold Coast Primary Health Network (GCPHN) to help fund activities that boost recovery and bring the affected communities together. Areas include Coomera, Clagiraba, Guanaba, Helensvale, Mudgeeraba, Oxenford, Pacific Pines, Paradise Point, Runaway Bay, Tallebudgera Valley, Upper Coomera, Wongawallan, Tamborine and North Tamborine. GCPHN CEO Matt Carrodus said the focus is on people. “While the property rebuilds continue, so are the psychological health recoveries of those residents directly affected by the storms,” Mr Carrodus said. “Through the support of initiatives that foster social bounce backs and on-going resilience, we aim to empower people with the resources and support necessary to complete their recovery journeys,” he said. Mr Carrodus said eligible funding activities include programs targeting psychological support, social isolation, sport and exercise classes, art therapy, skills development initiatives, community BBQs, and projects that deliver one-off material aid or emergency relief. Applications are now open, and funding will be available to successful applicants from May with programs needing to be completed by the 31st of August 2024. All the details can be found at: www.gcphn.org.au ORMEAU LEGAL & HILTON HARTLEY LAWYERS Two different names one great team Ormeau Legal is located in Peachey Road and has been operating in Ormeau for over 11 years. Tanya Williams is our Principal Solicitor who has been practising law for over 17 years. Tanya commenced her legal career as a Legal Officer with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in Beenleigh and Southport. During her career with the ODPP she appeared on sentences and breach hearings in the District Court of Queensland. Tanya then completed the Bar practice course and was admitted as a Barrister. During her time as a Barrister Tanya appeared on District Court sentences and appeared regularly in the Federal Circuit Court of Australia on Family law matters. Tanya then decided to return practising as a Solicitor and opened Ormeau Legal in 2012. During this time Tanya has acted for clients in relation to a variety of matters including Family law matters, Criminal and Traffic matters amongst other areas of law including Civil litigation and Wills and Estates. The firm started off small with just Tanya and a para-legal and has since grown to include a fulltime Conveyancer, para-legal and Solicitor. Tanya’s focus is on delivering practical legal advice at a reasonable cost to clients. In 2018 Tanya decided to open Hilton Hartley lawyers located at Pimpama City. The name is derived from her grandmother’s family names. Her grandmother recently turned 100 years of age and it was important to Tanya to preserve those names for future generations. Tanya’s daughter Olivia Roeszler was admitted as a Solicitor earlier this year and her son Daniel Roeszler is due to be admitted as a Solicitor in early 2024. Tanya’s team is comprised of Chantal Hill who is a Senior Associate and practices predominantly in the area of Family Law and Department of Child Safety matters. Chantal is passionate about family law and is a strong advocate for her clients. Olivia Roeszler is our newly admitted Solicitor although she is not new to law, having been employed at Ormeau Legal for 10 years as a para-legal. Olivia practices predominantly in the area of Wills and Estates and Family Law. Olivia is extremely approachable and has been described as being friendly and highly efficient. Thomas Stubbings is our criminal lawyer who is happiest when he is wading through briefs of evidence and making submissions to Police Prosecutions in an attempt to have his client’s charges withdrawn or reduced. Tom appears almost daily in the Magistrates and District Courts of Queensland and has proven to be a worthy advocate having been successful in having charges completely withdrawn or reduced significantly for his clients. Renee Dormer has been admitted as a Solicitor for over 10 years and practices across a number of areas of law. Renee has completed her Family Dispute Resolution training to practice as an accredited mediator and is also undertaking her Master of Laws (Applied Law) majoring in Family Dispute Resolution Practice. Renee is local to the area and is known for her friendly and approachable personality. Sharyn Polzin is our full-time conveyancer. Sharyn has over 30 years’ experience in conveyancing and if there is something Sharyn doesn’t know, then it probably isn’t worth knowing. Sharyn works closely with a number of buyers agents and has formed excellent working relationships with clients which is evident in the number of repeat clients we see at Ormeau Legal. Daniel Roeszler is completing his law degree and is due to be admitted as a Solicitor in early 2024. Daniel currently assists our team on legal matters ranging from Family, Criminal, Traffic, Civil and conveyancing files. Daniel is the first point of contact at Ormeau Legal and our clients describe Daniel as friendly and extremely helpful. See advert front cover

There is nothing like the love and warmth of a foster family. Fostering enables pets to thrive in a home where they are less stressed. Fostering is also crucial for pets too young to be at the shelter due to their fragile immune system. In addition, pets can have a quiet space to heal from an illness or surgery or support to improve various behaviours. Fostering is one of the most important ways to help animals in need. In addition, providing AWLQ residents somewhere to stay for a short time helps save lives. AWLQ promise to never euthanise a healthy, sociable or treatable animal in their care. And they believe that all animals in our care deserve to have the best possible chance at finding a loving, permanent home. AWLQ foster carers have one of the most critical roles – they allow AWLQ to keep this promise to thousands of animals yearly. As a foster carer, you may assist animals with special medical or behavioural needs, mothers with nursing litters or underage animals who need special feeding and socialisation. Or even animals recovering from surgeries or may have an injury requiring specific care. Visit awlqld.com.au/foster for more information or to join the foster roster today.

10 Peachey CG News Kids Corner This is normally the space I give your kids something to create, I find myself wanting to thank you, the concerned family, who posted about the young person 8 or 9 years old on Eggersdorff Road at midnight looking for access into homes with his nerf gun. How can we address this sad waste of a young life? Our local area is showing symptoms of overload and help is needed more than ever. We do have some great heroes to assist people, like Night Light run by Johnny Porter and his team. Kiki with the Community Chest at Peachey, the Ormeau Progress Association who are there to listen and act on your behalf to the council. If you are doing something to ease the load let us know we would like to promote you too. Herb of the month with Annemaree Thy humble parsley. I grow both in pots…. The flat leaf and the curly. The flat leaf is usually preferable as it has a stronger flavour and when it goes to seed, I rely on the curly leaf that has not gone to seed in all the years that it has been in my company. The plants are deep rooting so the deeper the pot the better, though mine are happy in 40cm pots. And as always prefer the garden soil. Require good drainage and enjoys a sunny position. Keep soil moist. To germinate seeds, store in fridge, then soak for several hours in warm water. Plant in soil with a light covering. Parsley contains vitamins A, B, B2, B3, C and E as well as the minerals, calcium, potassium, magnesium, manganese, iron, copper, iodine, sodium and phosphorus. Apparently parsley wine is great for the heart, an awesome tonic to build up healthy blood! The Middle East use it in tabouli the French love parsley and garlic butter with their snails, the Swiss enjoy a melted cheese fondue with deep fried parsley on the side, the English like parsley jelly all wobbly and green, the Mexicans use parsley as a prime ingredient in salsa verde, Russians eat it steamed as a green vegetable, oh and in Australia it is used as a garnish that gets thrown in the bin One of the healthiest and easiest things to grow in the garden is garlic. Love garlic on my potatoes and tomato dishes, with mushrooms, in sauces, stuffings, egg dishes and parsley butter. Is a traditional herb in the bouquet garni with bay, thyme and marjoram. So enjoy happy gardening Free to beautify your space. Bring buckets, bring your trailer, fill it with bark chips for your gardens, walkways and under swing sets. The storm season has delivered to us huge amounts of chips that we don’t have space for. Please come and help yourself. Great for no dig gardens or filling up space in raised garden beds. Even now that she’s thirty, she returns every August with her closest friends to help close up the camp for the fall and, more importantly, relive memories and experiences that fill her with joy. But when burn-out and an awful break-up inspire Clara to quit her job (in front of the entire office!), her annual vacation turns into a much-needed escape from reality. But when she arrives, she faces yet another unwelcome change: the owners are retiring, and selling Pine Lake Camp. The news turns her plans for revelry into a night of reminiscing . . . and prompts a surprise heart-to-heart between Clara and Mack, her childhood camp nemesis and constant competitor, who’s just as annoying (and annoyingly handsome). Soon the campfires aren’t all that’s throwing off sparks. And when one wildly passionate night turns into two (then too many to count!), Clara begins to see Mack in a new light and offers to help him put together a presentation to buy Pine Lake. But when Clara’s old job offers her everything she’s worked so hard for, if only she’ll come back, Clara will need to decide if the life she’s always wanted is the life that makes her feel truly alive. Women’s health expert Lara Briden believes that weight gain is primarily the symptom of metabolic dysfunction, not the cause. And if you have metabolic dysfunction, it’s because something is amiss with your brain’s regulatory mechanism, not your willpower. Drawing on her experience with thousands of patients, Lara has created a 10-step troubleshooting solution that will help you identify your personal metabolic obstacles, such as hormonal issues, digestive problems, ultra-processed food, chronic stress and inadequate sleep. Lara offers actionable strategies for overcoming these obstacles and explains why a simple intervention, such as fixing your gut, can reverberate through your entire system and help to regulate hunger and burn more energy. Underpinned by solid science, patient studies and practical advice, this is a compassionate, reality-based guide to repairing your metabolism and reclaiming your health.
